Artist Profile: Ajapai
A mysterious name from a mysterious man that puts out hypnotic tunes and quality bass. Hailing from Japan, Ajapai has been producing since 2001, though not in quantities you'd think. Real name, Toshihiko Mori, the man has released 1 album (2009), 3 EPs (2001, 2010, 2011) several singles and a few remixes ranging from 2001-2003. Signing onto Rottun Records in 2010, his tracks have been dropped by most of the bigger name Rottun crew (a la Excision, Datsik and Downlink to my knowledge) and shows no signs of stopping any time soon. As always, great artists have a sound that can't be exactly described (or even accurately sometimes), and this is the case for Ajapai. You can say he's dubstep, grime, drum n bass, drumstep, whatever, but at the end of the day, his tracks are just plain sick. If you're local to Edmonton, be sure to catch him at Buffalo next Saturday for a live show put on by Connected and Future Roots.
